Director of Systems Change and Learning

About The Role
The Director of Systems Change and Learning will lead strategy facilitation and learning processes that maximize the impact of Sequoia’s grantmaking.  This role will integrate expertise from across disciplines, including hard and soft systems thinking, individual and organizational learning theory, and the mental models that underpin systemic theories of change and action.  The Director of Systems Change and Learning will provide facilitation support to Sequoia’s grantmaking teams during strategy development processes (including facilitating systems mapping and iterative development of theories of change and action), as well as lead Sequoia’s in-house learning agenda.  This agenda will provide the unifying framework for both emergent learning and evaluative inquiry by Sequoia staff and our partners.  The Director of Systems Change and Learning will report to the Chief Evidence and Learning Officer and collaborate closely with Sequoia’s Evidence and Learning and Programmatic teams.

 

 
Key Responsibilities
  • Leads the iterative development of facilitated strategy processes (and templates) that interweaves complex systems thinking with quantitative analysis on speed, scale, likelihood of success and cost of greenhouse gas emissions (led by other Evidence and Learning staff).
  • Leads the development and implementation of an organizational learning agenda for Sequoia, focused on creating the practices and processes necessary to deliver credible and salient insights to our grantmaking staff, grantees, and partner organizations.
  • Integrates relevant theories and mental models of change into theories of change and action.
  • Provides capacity building support to Sequoia staff to engage in key learning behaviors, including (but not limited to) strategic reflection calls with grantees, periodic pauseandreflect practices, and the development of emergent learning agendas.
  • Builds and maintains an external network to remain up to date on advances in the application of systems thinking, organizational learning to support the development of high ambition, highly leveraged strategies for climate action.
  • Fosters a culture of iterative experimentation and learning among Sequoia staff and our partner organizations.
  • Represents Sequoia Climate Foundation at conferences and meetings with NGOs, funders, experts, and consultants, ensuring followup as needed.
  • Perform other duties as required.
Qualifications
  • Graduate Degree in science, engineering, mathematics, politics, or economics required. 
  • A minimum of 10 years working in strategy development, systems change, or organizational learning roles required.
  • A minimum of 3 years on climate change mitigation or other sustainability issues required. 
  • Experience with implementing complex systems frameworks (and associated tools) to underpin strategy is required. 
  • Experience with design and implementation of learning process, practices and frameworks required.
  • Ability to integrate qualitative and quantitative insights required. 
  • Knowledge of relevant theoretical frameworks (i.e., mental models, logic models) that underpin policy change and social change efforts.

About The Role
The Impact Evaluation Manager will reimagine the role of impact evaluation in climate philanthropy for Sequoia Climate Foundation. They will develop a framework for, and lead the implementation of, credible mixed-methods evaluations that blend econometric approaches and systems thinking to support ambitious climate action.  These evaluations may weave together quasi-experimental approaches, Blue Marble evaluation principles, and Bayesian contribution tracing in novel ways.  They will co-design and co-implement targeted research on how change happens with Sequoia’s staff and partners, with a strong focus on embedding the insight derived from evaluative thinking and research into strategy and implementation.  They will report to the Chief Evidence and Learning Officer and work closely with colleagues across Sequoia Climate Foundation, as well as external partners, including peer funders and grantees.

 

 
Key Responsibilities
  • Co-design and implement a novel framework for the use of impact evaluation in philanthropic decision-making that aligns with Sequoia’s broader Evidence and Learning agenda.
  • Lead quantitative and mixed methods approach to evaluate the systems-wide impact of climate mitigation actions, with a focus on the speed, scale, likelihood of success, and cost of emissions reductions.
  • Supports the development and execution of Sequoia’s strategies, goals, policies, and initiatives.
  • Engages with the Evidence and Learning Community of aligned donors and practitioners working to advance the goals of Sequoia.
  • Identifies partners and collaborations to advance grantmaking/evidence and learning strategies, including, as appropriate, active participation in collaboratives, conferences, and workshops.

Qualifications
  • Advanced Degree in science, economics, or mathematics required.
  • A minimum of seven years working in climate change or a similarly complex field (e.g., international development, biodiversity conservation, humanitarian aid) is required.
  • Experience with applying analytical frameworks to support casual inference is required.  This may include econometrics or Bayesian approaches to inference.
  • Experience in systems thinking and systems change approaches to evaluation is highly preferred.
  • Experience embedding research or evaluative practices into implementation teams is highly preferred.

We actively seek a collaborative, bold, and innovative thinker who can help us identify and evaluate ambitious climate strategies capable of driving transformative change in the world.  The Program Manager, US, will report to and work closely with the US Program Director and collaborate with Sequoia Climate Foundation leadership to manage grantmaking portfolios and will manage productive relationships with grantees, communicating openly and engaging directly with them. The Program Manager works with leadership to both develop and execute strategies and plans aligned with the organizational mission and vision. They will develop, support, and execute strategies as needed, compile the research and evidence necessary to assess their potential impact and chances for success, and identify the organizations best positioned to execute them. They will support in leading a team and work with peer networks, government officials, thought leaders, and key stakeholders to assess emerging needs, gaps, and opportunities in the field.

Key Responsibilities

  • Advance strategy execution, including conducting research and analysis on climate sector trends, developing coherent theories of change and theories of action, and identifying, screening, and supporting grantee partners in developing robust projects aligned with the theory of action.  Write investment recommendations articulating the rationale for funding a cohort of projects and partners and present them to the Program Directors and Executive Team.
  • Consistent with Sequoia’s “learning and evidence approach,” keep in regular contact with funded partners, including through site visits, and support execution consistent with goals in mind, supporting adaptive management by partners as needed.
  • Work with the Program Directors to undertake or commission sector-relevant research and analysis to inform the effective development, delivery, and evaluation of programs and initiatives.

  • Experience working in government, non-profit, advocacy, or for a philanthropic organization is preferred.
